Overview

MATRIX Fife is a department of Fife Council, managed as part of the Economic, Planning, and Employability directive. A local authority enterprise that has been in business for 30 years, the organisation employs over 40 people, and a commercial review was required to help it become more self-sustaining in the future.

Brief

CJM Lumina was tasked with developing a five-year business plan alongside an assessment of the enterprise’s commercial viability.

MATRIX owns a site in Dalgety Bay where it offers a high-quality range of products and services to both domestic and commercial customers. Products include:

  • Furniture: they manufacture chairs, occasional tables, footstools, and radiator covers
  • Soft furnishings
  • Upholstery: they cover armchairs, chairs, conservatory, and garden furniture
  • Working closely with local Councils and the NHS they refurbish Occupational Therapy equipment
  • The supply and fitting of Keysafes, and installation of security and safety equipment – including safety gates, fire guards & door chains

The review also had to balance planned commercial success with the social value being delivered across communities of Fife.

Delivery

We researched and developed a comprehensive review and business plan that covered the following elements:

  • Range of products and services
  • Product and service innovation
  • Local authority procurement
  • Reactive manufacturing
  • New opportunities – Factoring
  • Marketing materials
  • A review of current systems
  • Underutilised assets
  • Investment required for long-term sustainability

The business plan also outlined the opportunities and risks faced by the business, as well as a roadmap for them to become self-sustaining and less reliant on council backed funding.

Results

The report was one that instigated tangible change for MATRIX, one that not only helped them to develop the enterprise but also deliver more social value via its workforce leading full and happy lives.
